Subscription feeds are designed so that subscription fees are charged for unique quality content. Publisher include teaser copy in the RSS feed and readers have to purchase a subscription to see the content in its entirety. The New York Times was the first to introduce the subscription model. Initially the NY Times faced some resentment from users who had become accustom to free RSS based content, but ultimately consumers realize that businesses must achieve profits in order to continue.

Transforming your A/V setup into a 3D setup would certainly be a lot easier if everything were free. Sony is giving at least one person that leg up, hosting a contest titled "Your Life in Sony 3D." This is a social media-driven contest, which means you actually need to do something besides fill in your name and address. First, go to Sony's Facebook page and click on "Your Life in Sony 3D" in the left-hand menu. From there, you'll need to submit a short description of an event you want to see captured in 2011. I'm guessing it needs to be an event that involves you and/or your family and not something like you expect Sony to pay for. Add in a photo and submit your entry into one of four categories: Sports & Recreation, Arts & Entertainment, Cause & Community or Life Milestones & Events. From there, friends and strangers can vote for your idea. The top five submissions (and another five picked by producers at 3net and Sony) will then go a final panel of judges. Push for more 3D content will result in greater viewing options for consumers. Panasonic was spreading the 3D love last week at an invitation-only press event at the Panasonic Hollywood Labs (PHL) in Universal City, Calif. Members of the press, including me, got a rare glimpse of the magic that goes behind the making of 3D films, even being the first to view a clip of Storm Chasers in 3D. Designed as a testing ground for filmmakers and producers, PHL has helped the movie industry learn about and implement technologies such as high-def and Blu-ray. Now, it's time for it to "serve as an incubator for the creation of new 3D content by Hollywood," says Shiro Kitajima, CEO, Panasonic Corporation, North America. At the event, Panasonic displayed a bullish attitude on the acceptance and adoption of 3D by both content providers and consumers. "We see all of the pieces coming together," says Kitajima. As for the "hardware piece" of the equation, Panasonic expects 70 percent of its 2011 TVs lineup to be 3D capable. Content providers DirecTV and 20th Century Fox Entertainment are equally optimistic. I can point to several specific things that have dramatically slowed consumer adoption of 3D in the home, of which the blame can be fairly distributed among both hardware and content producers. On the content side, there's plenty of blame to go around. For example, Panasonic's exclusive lock on James Cameron's Avatar on Blu-Ray 3D is one; they're holding hostage one of the few exceptional pieces of 3D material that really sells the 3D experience. Pricing for Blu-Ray 3D is another, as few (sane) people are going to spend $40 plus for one movie - 3D or not. Many will also point out that few television genres outside of sports that have even attempted to do much with 3D technology. The hardware side is a more interesting debate. Some will say that the cost premium for a 3DTV over a regular HDTV is to blame, although I whole-heartedly disagree . Even last year, 3D's first big breakout year, Samsung and Panasonic both had 3D capable sets at pretty reasonable prices. Sure, a premium over an equivalent HD only model, but not enough so that those interested in 3D wouldn't find value in the difference. I'll place all the hardware blame...
While not the first to deliver a 3D adapter that makes Blu-Ray 3D and any other HDMI 1.4 required 3D device compatible with older DLP-Link 3D capable products (like Mitsubishi's 3DC-100S ), although ViewSonic's entry is certainly more affordable than most... depending on how you look at it. As far as VP3D1 itself goes, it's a pretty straightforward device; two HDMI 1.4 inputs, one HDMI 1.3 out, and a USB port for firmware updates (if any). It will accept top-bottom, side-by-side, and frame stacking 3D formats at various resolutions (including PC resolutions) and convert the signal to a DLP-Link friendly 720p format. The VP3D1 will automatically detect 3D Blu-Ray formats over HDMI 1.4, but SBS (side-by-side) 3D modes may need to be manually activated. $299 MSRP is certainly more affordable than Mitsubishi's offering, but ViewSonic's adapter comes sans glasses. They'll sell them to you, but for $109 a crack. Thankfully, you can pair this with just about any DLP-Link glasses kit from a variety of third parties, making this package very flexible for the user.
