Dolby Plans Lighter, Theft-Free 3D Theater Glasses

While manufacturers work on new 3D glasses for the home, Dolby has announced a little something special for theatergoers. Compatible with Dolby 3D Digital Cinemas, Dolby's 3D glasses promise a more comfortable viewing experience at a lower price. Don't get too excited. Even though the passive glasses are cheaper, I am guessing the cost won't have an effect on ticket prices. However, theater owners should be happy... and you do have that comfort thing to fall back on. Dolby worked with 3M on the new multilayer optical film lens, which is what makes those glasses slightly lighter. They also have a new nylon frame with wide side temples and a little shelf along the top. These serve almost like blinders, keeping all of that extra theater light out of your viewing experience. So here comes the twist. All of you out there that think you are entitled to keep those 3D glasses after the movie (although, unless you have a passive system at home, I still don't understand why)… good luck walking out with these. Each pair will include serialized RFID tags to keep you from pilfering the pair. At $12, they aren't cheap, you know. However, they are reusable...
