For a long time Christians were reticent to enter the field of fiction writing. Although fiction had been popular in the secular field for a long time, it was sparse in Christian publishing. The popularity of authors Frank Peretti and then later Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins certainly opened up the door much wider for acceptance of Christian fiction.
For me, I first saw fiction as the opposite of truth. Eventually I saw that it could be true and effective. Often it can cut to the truth more effectively than nonfiction.
Fiction definitely appeals to a broader audience. I started writing fiction to reach those who would not pick up an issues-oriented book but who wanted to read a story. Consequently, I was able to weave God’s truth throughout the story line.
Hopefully, my heart and message come across through my fiction. It’s been incredibly encouraging to hear from many people whose views on issues have drastically changed through reading one of my novels.
In this four and a half minute video I talk about creativity and research in the process of writing.
