Q. I have a Samsung 3D TV C7000, and my question is if Batman Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition will work on 3DTVs like the James Cameron's: Avatar game? Avatar was awesome in 3D. Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition comes with regular green and pink 3D glasses, but I don't want that, I want the 3D features like Avatar and others 3D games for PS3 to enjoy the actual 3D technology. - Yohec A. Rocksteady apparently opted to cast a larger net, and by going with anaglyph technology the game could be enjoyed in 3D on any television... with the obvious repurcussions of the red-cyan approach. Queston: What's the right seating distance from a 3DTV for the optimal 3D effect? -submitted by various visitors Answer: There has been a great deal of confusion regarding seating distance and 3D. While it may seem there is a different optimum range to better enjoy 3D effects on 3D TVs, based on my experience and what I've read from other industry professionals, the optimum seating distance for active-shutter glasses-based 3DTV sets (the vast majority of home 3D sets) doesn't appear to be much different than the optimum range for regular HDTVs. That said, the general consensus is that bigger is better for an immersive 3D effect. So, it's better to go larger than smaller if 3D is your primary concern. Those with auto-stereoscopic (glasses free) sets may have more problems with viewing distances and viewing angles... not that there are many large screen auto-stereoscopic sets out there. Tthe correct viewing spots for these sets will vary, and will be outlined in the user manual for the TV. 3D Cinema Popularity Predicts Home 3D Success

Without a doubt the reemergence of the 3D video format is one of the most controversial developments to occur in the consumer electronics market. The format, despite the criticisms of traditional videophiles is growing and proponents of the technology are emphasizing the growth of 3D-capable cinemas in the commercial market as proof of the technology's increasing popularity. Home Media magazine says that 3D supporters are pointing to the format's success in commercial cinemas as a gauge that people can use to determine whether the format will succeed in the home. "We're building to a second boon," says Chris Chinnock, president of Insight Media in the Home Media magazine report. Insight Media is a company that organized and oversees an entertainment and electronics trade organization called 3D@Home Consortium , and the group's members include Intel , Sony , Dolby Labs , THX , Turner Broadcasting and ESPN 3D . In the story Chinnock claims there are more than 100 3D films currently in production and that there could be a total of at least 140 3D movies slated to hit the cinemas between 2012 and 2015. DP brings 3D to Pacific Design Center

As curious as the public has been about what's going on with the influx of new 3D technologies into the consumer electronics market, the professionals in Hollywood have been just as curious as to how these technologies will affect their profession. Helping to bridge this educational gap is the projector manufacturer Digital Projection (DP), which has been simultaneously educating the consumer and commercial cinema markets through its dealer network and participation in various trade events. The Atlanta-based manufacturer's latest educational effort targets the pro sector of the 3D market and it involves system demonstrations at the Pacific Design Center 's WESTWEEK 2011 show. The show is scheduled for the week of March 23-24 and it will host more than 70 showroom presentations. In its demonstrations DP will be showing its TITAN Reference 1080p-3D projector in a home theater that also includes a control and automation system from Crestron Electronics and a full surround sound system from Steinway Lyngdorf . WESTWEEK is the Pacific Design Center's largest industry event and it offers attendees keynote lectures, showroom programs and book signings. My 3D Glasses Experiences and Observations

Although I have them, I rarely wear my eyeglasses. I also don't wear sunglasses very often, so I'm not used to wearing any kind of glasses. I wanted to give that background before I go into my thoughts on wearing 3D glasses to watch TV and movies at home, as follows, in no particular order: Yes, 3D glasses are annoying to wear. However, I kind of already knew this going in. I tried them out in several stores and realized that I was going to have deal with wearing glasses while watching movies and shows in order to get this 3D effect. That was a compromise I was willing to make and still am. Just because I have to put up with it though doesn't mean I have to like it. You can't really lay down and watch with 3D glasses. This one was more of a suprise to me since I don't have glasses, but more obvious after I thought about it after the fact. International iPad 2 launch snapshot: New Zealand

Here's a preview of what international Apple fans can expect for the iPad 2 launch later today. The iPad 2 went on sale in New Zealand about an hour ago as I write this. About 15 minutes or so later, it pretty much sold out nationwide. iPhonewzealand has a good roundup of user pics from lineups all over the nation, and though the lines are much shorter than in the States, they still show great enthusiasm.

Two stores in the city I live in were authorized to sell the iPad 2 according to Apple's website: Dick Smith Electronics (DSE) and JB Hi-Fi. I watched the line progress at DSE, where about 40 people had lined up by the time the launch took place at 5 PM local time. Oddly enough, the first person in line said he'd only queued up an hour beforehand; by contrast, people in major cities like Auckland and Wellington had been in line for several hours hoping to buy Apple's latest gadget. This was in spite of the fact that many resellers didn't give line standers official confirmation that they had stock on hand until well into the day -- New Zealand doesn't have any official Apple Stores, and for some reason, resellers were being very coy throughout the day.

Dick Smith sold through its entire stock of iPad 2 units in 15 minutes. Store employees wouldn't divulge exactly how many units they had ("very limited" was all they could tell me), but based on the number of people who left empty-handed, I'd say this store received a total of 25 units. JB Hi-Fi, on the other hand, actually had stock left over when I went there, with two units unsold. JB Hi-Fi's employees confirmed that they, too, received only around 25 units in total. The good news is, if you do manage to snag an iPad 2, you won't be left wanting for accessories. Although virtually every iPad 2 buying customer left DSE with a Smart Cover, there were dozens left over afterward.

Extrapolating upward from ~50 units sold in Palmerston North, that means New Zealand received at most 2500 iPad 2 units on launch day. Note that this is a very rough back-of-the-envelope calculation based on comparing the number of units in Palmerston North (50) versus its population (~80,000) versus the population of New Zealand (about four million). In reality, I'd guess the total number of iPad 2s sold today probably numbers closer to 1500 or less -- still much higher than my very pessimistic estimate of 500 units. That being said, given the very limited stock sold where I live and the 3-4 week shipping delay, I'm glad I got mine from the States.

All told, this paints a picture for the international iPad 2 launch that pretty much everyone had to expect after seeing how things went down in the US -- though countries like the UK and Australia, who both have official Apple Retail Stores, are likely to get much more allocated stock than New Zealand, where everything goes through resellers. Yes, the iPad 2 is launching in 25 countries on March 25..., but if you want one, you'd better get in line as soon as you finish reading this sentence. Go!

Prime Focus Doing Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menance 3D Conversion

Prime Focus, a group who provides creative and technical services to the film, broadcast, commercials, internet and media industries, has announced they've been selected by Lucasfilm to help convert Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace from 2D to 3D. According to Prime Focus, Lucasfilm and ILM selected Prime Focus after an exhaustive testing process. Prime Focus boasts working on some successful 3D titles in the past, like Avatar , Shrek , and The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader . Even George himself has some positibe comments to say about their work. “It was incredibly important to me that we have the technology, the resources and the time to do this right,” said Star Wars creator George Lucas. “I’m very happy with the results I’ve been seeing on Episode I .” That, unfortunately, may not be enough. To date, nearly all 2D to 3D conversions have been poorly recieved thanks to the unnatural look and inconsistent 3D presentation. units

general:
-always set up the system unit before you import or create geometry
-do not change system units in an existing scene
-system units: 1 inch, leave as standard for compatability reasons
-1 unit is 1 cm
-display units: cm, important for fbx

system units:
-determines the actual scale of geometry
-1 unit is size for smallest geometric detail of scene

system unit calculator:
-use the slider to enter the distance from the origin to see the resulting acuracy at that point

display units:
-affects how geometry is displayed in viewports
-use whatever display unit, has no impact on scene

file load units mismatch:
-appears when opened file has different system unit settings than the current session
-option 1: rescales to match current sytem unit settings

Guy's Big Bite 3D Review

I will be the first to admit that I'm not one for cooking shows. Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love to cook. I just never seem to get the urge to watch a cooking show. That has changed, however, now that there is a cooking show available in 3D - "Guy's Big Bite," which normally airs on The Food Network . I have never heard of Guy Fieri, the chef that hosts Guy's Big Bite, so I had no preconceptions. After watching his show, I can see how he has a good following and can appeal to most people interested in cooking. Content Review This was a fairly typical cooking show. Guy used the half hour to prepare two dishes and a mixed drink. I watched Guy prepare the following dishes in 3D: Prosciutto and Peas Orechiette (pasta) Garlic Parmesan Crab Blood Orange Basil Collins (alcoholic drink) I have to admit that the pasta looked really good to me, and I might even try it myself. Guy is very good at explaining the dishes in a way so simple that anyone can understand. He uses fairly common ingredients, and the dishes that he presents (at least on this...

SIM2 adds Crystal Clear style to the 3D Projector Category

SIM2 the Italian high-performance video manufacturer is in the midst of celebrating its 15th anniversary by launching a series of advanced new projector designs, promotions, and events in several U.S. cities. Spearheading the company's U.S. marketing efforts is Alberto Fabiano, executive vice president of SIM2 USA. Fabiano will take part in the company's multi-city tour and he says the educational campaign is designed for the electronics installer and the interior design communities. Explaining the product side of its anniversary celebration Fabiano adds the company has spent a considerable amount of resources to develop several new products to address current market trends. “Over the past year, SIM2 has invested over $5 million dollars to develop, design, and manufacture an evolutionary line of products in our facility in Pordenone, Italy,” he says. “The new line of home-entertainment products offers the look and feel of luxury. Keeping SSDs in TRIM: doing the math

Love Apple gear? Like math? TUAW's Doing the Math series examines the numbers and the science that lie behind the hardware.

One of the new features we first saw in the developer beta of Mac OS X Lion back in February is long-overdue in this correspondent's humble opinion: it finally supports TRIM on solid-state drives.

TRIM (which, despite the capital letters, isn't an acronym) is a way to speed up SSD access by performing important housekeeping tasks in the background or on file deletes, rather than leaving it until the user is writing data to the drive. Since then, TRIM has also appeared in 10.6.6 for new Macs with Apple-supplied SSDs only, and with third-party tools, it's now possible to get TRIM running on any SSD under 10.6.7.

This raises the question: what exactly is TRIM, and why does it matter? If you've been wondering what this seemingly arbitrary abbreviation is, and why it matters, then I'm here with my best Science Hat on to remove all that wonder (as we scientists so often do) and replace it with cold hard fact.

No 3D on Mars for James Cameron

Apparently, James Cameron is not headed to Mars -- at least not anytime soon. The director had been working with NASA to attach 3D cameras to Mars Science Laboratory mission's Curiosity rover. However, it looks like it's not going to work out. "The possibility for a zoom-camera upgrade was very much worth pursuing, but time became too short for the levels of testing that would be needed," NASA said in a statement (via Discovery News ). When the rover launches in a few months, it will include two fixed-length cameras. However, that doesn't mean that Cameron is giving up on his space dreams. "While Curiosity won't benefit from the 3D motion imaging that the zooms enable, I'm certain that this technology will play an important role in future missions," Cameron said in a statement. How To Export Your Remembary Diary

For something as important as your personal diary, it's always a good idea to have a backup somewhere. You might also want to print out your diary on paper, or even bind it together into a book. Remembary lets you do this, but a lot of people have been having trouble figuring out how to do it. Here's how it works:

1. First, tap on the 'gears' icon on the left side of the top bar. This brings up the diary prefs popover.

2. Tap on the "Export Diary to Text" button. Depending on how much you have in your diary, your iPad will churn for a while, perhaps up to a minute. This is normal - it's loading up everything in your diary! Just wait while it runs. Eventually the text box will come up with "... exported to Journal.txt".

3. Plug your iPad into your computer, then go to iTunes and select your iPad in the sidebar. Pick "Apps" from the page that comes up.

4. Scroll down to the bottom part of the "apps" page, and you'll see a list of apps that allow file transfers. One of the apps in the list will be Remembary - click on it.

5. In the list on the right, you should see "Journal.txt" in there. That's your diary! Drag that file out to your computer's desktop. Now you can do whatever you want with it - open it in Word, Pages, or TextEdit, and format it to your heart's content, print it out, or just keep in a safe place.

Yes, I agree that this is a somewhat awkward process. Upcoming versions of Remembary will include options for exporting only a specific day, week, month, or year, emailing your diary, or syncing it to DropBox or MobileMe.
